With our 10-year anniversary fast approaching, we decided to celebrate with a huge splurge on a sunrise hot air balloon ride in Göreme, Cappadocia.  At 100 Euros (~$130 CAD) per person for an hour-long flight, it made for the single most expensive day of our travels (not counting international flights or the day we bought our house, that is).  Even for frugal travelers like ourselves, it was honestly worth every single penny.  It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and, for me, ranks as one of the best experiences of our journey.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

    Such amazing pictures!
And actually, €100 for a ride isn’t that much. I’ve heard ’em go a lot pricier than that!

I’m pretty sure it costs more than that in our home province back in Canada – and all there is to see there is flat prairie.

We were just in Luxor, Egypt and almost considered another balloon ride… the price just before New Year’s was an incredibly low 250 Egyptian pounds ($38 CAD), though the ride was only half an hour versus the hour we got in Cappadocia. We arrived New Year’s Day, however, and the price had already jumped to 500 pounds. Still a steal of a deal, but we decided against it.

We went with skyway balloons. We did check out a few reviews online, but ended up choosing them after our hotel owner gave an emphatic review. We were there right at the end of the tourist season, so finding a balloon that had room for us was not a concern.

If you have the chance, I highly recommend the balloon ride. Especially if you have never done one before. We had a great time. Without a doubt, it’s one of my favourite travel memories.

As far as Skyways is concerned, The crew was professional, the breakfast was decent, the free pickup from the hotel was nice, and the campaign after the landing was nice too. I’m not sure that they are the best, but there’s nothing wrong with them either. Based on our experience, they won’t disappoint.
